AGM Diversity Fellowship Key Facts and FAQs

  1. What are the requirements to apply to the Program?
    a. You must be a person of color.
    b. You must have a minimum of Bachelor’s Degree and five (5) years professional work experience; or a Master’s Degree and three (3) years professional work experience.
    c. You must be prepared to commit to the program full time for the period July 2009 –June 2010 .
    d. You must currently reside in the United States and satisfy Federal laws regarding employment eligibility verification.
    e. You must have strong analytical and communication skills (writing and speech).
    f. You should have a demonstrated track record of community service/volunteerism, especially in communities of color.

  2. Is there any flexibility in the education/work experience requirements for applying?
    a. No. We intend this program as a launching point for careers in philanthropy. Hiring requirements at nearly every foundation in the country (for professional positions) include a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree.

  3. Is it possible to do the Fellowship and work part-time at another job?
    a. No – the program is a full-time program and will require reading and other activities outside of general business hours. It will not be possible to hold another job and successfully complete this program.

  4. Is this a paid Fellowship?
    a. Yes – you will receive a stipend that totals $45,000 for the 12 month period (July 2009 - June 2010). In addition, you will be eligible for limited benefits including the ability to enroll in AGM’s healthcare insurance plan, leave time, and holidays.

  5. Do I have to be from Massachusetts to apply?
    a. No. The host foundation placements and group learning activities take place in Massachusetts. We anticipate that most placements will be in the greater Boston area, but may also have placements in New Hampshire, Rhode Island, central Massachusetts or western Massachusetts. You will be required to attend once-a-week group learning activities in Boston.

  6. I’m from out of state – if I’m selected as a finalist, will you be able to help with my travel costs for the interview?
    a. Yes, we have funds available to assist with the costs of travel to Boston for the interview on Thursday, April 30, 2009.

  7. Is there assistance to help Fellows relocate from other states if they are selected for the program?
    a. No, unfortunately at this time, we do not have funds available to assist with moves.

  8. What is the timeline for the 2008-2009 Program year?
    a. January 9, 2009- Application is available on Diversity Fellows website.
    b. March 12, 2009 at 5 pm EST – Applications are due via email to diversity@agmconnect.org.
    Late applications will not be accepted.
    c. March 27, 2009 – Applicants are notified of whether they have been accepted as a finalist.
    d. March 30 to April 3 – Finalists are contacted by phone for pre-interview discussion.
    e. April 30 – Interviews with finalists. Please note that if you are accepted as a finalist you must participate in the day-long interview on April 30. There will be no other opportunities to interview.
    f. No later than May 15 – Finalists are notified if they have been selected for the program.
    g. July 13 – Fellows begin their orientation at Associated Grant Makers.
    h. July 27 - Fellows report to host sites.
