The Salvation Army and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, a Winning Partnership
Our employee volunteer program at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is thriving thanks in part to strong community partnerships with organizations like the Salvation Army.
For the past five years, we have been helping the Salvation Army to serve at-risk populations during the holidays. The partnership began in 2002 with a group of 65 associates helping at an annual event called the Christmas Castle, which provides toys, coats, hats, and mittens to Boston’s neediest families. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts now sends hundreds of volunteers annually to this wonderful event. Since 2002, over 500 Blue Cross Blue Shield volunteers have helped to staff the event, serving in a number of capacities from registering people at the check-in table, to restocking items, escorting parents through the castle, and helping them choose items for their children.
Throughout the year, Blue Cross Blue Shield associates work behind the scenes to create decorations for the event, serve on an event committee, and collect new and gently used coats, hats and mittens for the event. The event is financially underwritten by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Additionally, the Christmas Castle is managed by a Blue Cross Blue Shield Senior Vice President who has made it his mission to ensure the success of this event. He goes so far as to personally choose the toys provided at the event and manage the event committee year round. This same executive also volunteers his own time serving as a Salvation Army board member
The Christmas Castle is just one way in which our volunteers help the Salvation Army throughout the year. In addition, nearly 500 associates joined forces to help the Salvation Army make Thanksgiving possible for families in need and hundreds of others dressed over 700 teddy bears to be distributed to children during the holidays. Blue Cross Blue Shield Associates wait all year to help out at these holiday events. With a fantastic track record of partnering on successful events like the Christmas Castle, it’s easy to understand why.
