The Position: 

FamilyAid Boston seeks a skilled, strategic, and collaborative writer to join our Development and Communications team. The Communications Specialist will work closely with the Director of Development and External Relations and the Development Officer to tell FamilyAid Boston’s story to the right audiences in a way that elevates the agency’s public profile and inspires donors to give. 

The Communications Specialist will learn FamilyAid Boston’s message inside and out and will work strategically to spread that message across both print and digital platforms. S/he will manage all of our communications projects and collaborate with the other members of the department to align projects with fundraising goals. The ideal candidate will be:

  • An excellent writer and communicator 
  • An organized project manager
  • Adept at social media, website content management, and analytics
  • Driven by a passionate interest in telling the stories of parents and children who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness

Responsibilities: 

  • Write compelling content for all marketing and fundraising communications including appeal letters, newsletters, and annual reports  
  • Manage website and social media, maintain content calendar, create and curate content, and develop analytics reports
  • Work with program staff to identify clients for interviews and profiles
  • Interview clients in order to give broader voice to their stories
  • Take photographs that bring our programs to life on the page
  • Work with Development Officer to generate and manage twice-annual mail appeal
  • Work with Director of Development and External Relations to draft and distribute media advisories and press releases 
  • Write and edit grant proposals and reports in collaboration with team
  • Manage collateral projects including working with graphic designers, printers, and other vendors
  • Manage inventory of printed materials including brochures and informational packets
  • Assist with annual fundraising event and manage production of invitations, programs, and all other event materials
  • Other development and communications tasks as assigned

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree with outstanding academic qualifications and/or two to five years of professional experience
  • Excellent writing and editing skills and ability to write for different audiences and platforms
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Flexibility to respond to unexpected challenges and opportunities
  • Experience with social media campaigns (primarily Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) and social media analytics for nonprofits or similar groups
  • Experience with website content management systems and analytics
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or similar design software
  • Commitment to giving voice to parents and children experiencing or at risk of homelessness
  • Respect for and sensitivity to families in crisis
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully in a multi-cultural environment

Hours: 

Full-time, 40 hours per week, occasional evening and weekend availability for events
