Position title:  Development Associate

Mission: The Women’s Fund of Western Massachusetts (WFWM) is a public foundation serving Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden counties by investing in the lives of local women and girls through grantmaking and leadership programs. 

Position summary: The Development Associate is responsible for supporting the efforts of The Fund’s development efforts. A key member of the Fund’s small staff, this position works in close collaboration with the Director of Philanthropy and the Fund’s CEO to achieve specific fundraising and development goals.

Major responsibilities:

  • Manage the Fund’s donor database (currently Raiser’s Edge 7), including but not limited to records maintenance, gift entry, creating queries, and running reports
  • Administer correspondence with donors, ensuring timely gift acknowledgement, pledge reminders, and responding to donor inquiries
  • Cultivate relationships with assigned individual or corporate donors and prospects via written correspondence, by phone, and occasionally in person
  • Conduct research on individuals, corporations, and foundations, working closely with the Director of Philanthropy to identify new prospective sources of income
  • Engage with WFWM program staff to gather information for donor communications as well as grant applications and reports
  • Coordinate annual fund initiatives to include assisting with creation and mailing of external stakeholder communications such as newsletters, donor appeals, and event invitations
  • Assist with planning and coordination of fundraising events, donor receptions, and other WFWM events
  • Assist with preparation of reports on results of WFWM fundraising and development initiatives
  • Ensure WFWM donors receive the highest level of responsiveness and client service
  • Provide additional administrative support as needed; other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree required, with a minimum of two years of fundraising or related experience
  • Solid computer skills in a PC environment with the capability to master new software applications and technologies, including database management, proficiency in Raiser's Edge a plus
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills as well as the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of individuals to include staff, donors, Board members, volunteers, and other members of the WFWM community
  • Excellent editing, proofreading, and research skills required
  • Demonstrated time-management skills, including an ability to meet multiple deadlines, respond to multiple constituents, and set priorities with a high level of organization
  • Must be able to handle confidential materials with discretion
  • Motivated and results oriented, with the ability to take initiative

Reports to:       Director of Philanthropy

Salary:              $30,000 to $40,000 non-exempt ($14.42 to $19.23 per hour)
