Ibis Reproductive Health is a nonprofit organization with a mission to improve reproductive autonomy, choices, and health worldwide. Our core activity is clinical and social science research on issues receiving inadequate attention in other research settings and where gaps in the evidence exist. Our agenda focuses on increasing access to safe abortion and expanding contraceptive access and choices. We partner with advocates, health care providers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to design and conduct research to improve policies and delivery of services in countries around the world to advance reproductive justice and equity. We seek an individual with a commitment to sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice to join the team in Cambridge, MA, as a Senior Communications Manager. The Senior Communications Manager will play a key leadership role in developing and executing Ibis Reproductive Health’s communication strategies across all mediums and in the countries we work in. This position is a key member of the Free the Pill campaign team, a multi-year effort to bring an oral contraceptive over the counter in the United States; approximately 50% of the individual’s time will be spent on this project. A competitive candidate for this position will have experience communicating research and leading evidence-based advocacy communications to a wide range of audiences. The Senior Communications Manager reports to the Vice President for Development and Public Affairs.
Strategic communications planning
- Works with Ibis colleagues and our communications consulting firm to develop and implement a strategic communications plan designed to raise awareness about Ibis and our work. This includes raising the public profile of Ibis, strengthening our brand, and communicating our research results and recommendations to a global audience.
- Develops and implements an editorial calendar that leverages key communications moments and ensures the full range of Ibis’s work is shared in a variety of media and formats.
- Develops clear, consistent, and compelling language that communicates our research results and makes the connection to policy, product, and service delivery change. Uses this language and key messages to connect our work across the globe, through different movement spaces, and especially the larger human rights, social justice, and reproductive health, rights, and justice spaces. Works with staff to incorporate this language into organizational communications.
- Works with the Ibis Senior Management Team and other staff to build Ibis’s organizational profile. Informs board members and staff of progress and provides talking points, training, and other tools so they are well-equipped to be effective ambassadors for Ibis in the media and other venues.
- Works with the Director of Southern Africa Programs and other staff to develop and support an effective communications strategy in South Africa and the Southern Africa/sub-Saharan Africa regions.
- Oversees implementation of strong and effective social media strategy.
- Oversees maintenance of Ibis websites, also ensuring they remain up-to-date and reflect current technological trends.
- Supervises the creation of electronic and printed communications materials, including working with outside vendors. Ensures communications follow guidelines and best practices for 501(c)(3) organizations.
- Collaborates with communications and program staff to cultivate relationships with key media outlets. Prepares press materials and organizes press events as necessary.
- Tracks impact of press outreach and oversees maintenance of media contacts and files.
- Maintains positive working relationships with key communications staff at partner organizations and in the reproductive health, rights, and justice community.
- Supervises the work of Ibis communications consultants.
- Works with research and project staff to identify communications opportunities to advance programmatic goals and prioritizes competing needs appropriately. This includes mapping out strategies, messages, and tools and drafting and reviewing briefs and infographics.
- Works with the Free the Pill team to develop and execute an ambitious communications strategy that builds awareness of and support for the campaign and supports the regulatory, research, policy, and field strategies.
- 5 or more years of communications experience
- Familiarity and comfort with social science research, particularly sexual and reproductive health research
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities on a range of concurrent projects with attention to detail, flexibility, and creativity
- Demonstrated interest in sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice
- Experience with and enthusiasm to work collaboratively with teams and partner organizations in a wide range of contexts
- Ability to make and carry out strategic decisions independently, and to seek input when needed
- Excellent writing and editing skills
