The Senior Director of Marketing and Communications will join BGCB at an inflection point in the organization’s 125-year history.  BGCB’s historic Opening Doors fundraising campaign has pivoted BGCB toward its future work to strengthen our community and expanded its mission-focused work of creating hope and opportunity for Boston and Chelsea youth.

In close partnership with the Executive Vice President of Development and Marketing, and working in collaboration with the entire Development team, the Senior Director will develop an agency-wide marketing and communications plan for internal and external audiences.

The individual holding this role must be both creative and analytical, and possess extensive knowledge across an array of disciplines and platforms necessary to engage and expand the donor pool and increase BGCB’s brand awareness.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Senior Director of Marketing and Communications plays an integral leadership role within the EVP’s cabinet. S/he has overall responsibility for a comprehensive and integrated marketing and communications team, supporting the entire organization toward achieving ambitious goals that align with BCGB’s ethos of innovation and renewal.

The organization’s marketing and communications department played an essential role in the Campaign’s ability to exceed its goal. As we leverage the success of this effort, the Senior Director has the unique opportunity to build upon a proven track record. In the post-campaign era, this leadership role will conduct a department-wide audit, benchmark current strategies, then set the strategic direction and management for the production of all communications materials, publications, and platforms, while overseeing and integrating marketing and communications staff. Additionally, the Senior Director will establish a set of measurements and consistently monitor marketing and communications activities to determine the impact of the Marketing and Communications strategy. This role serves as creative leader, project manager, editor, and principal writer for a wide variety of print and electronic projects, including annual reports, brochures, the BGCB web site, newsletters, social platforms, case materials, press articles, stewardship pieces, and other materials.

  • Together with BGCB’s leadership, develop an overarching messaging strategy for the Development and Marketing department, leadership volunteers, and program staff engaged in internal and external marketing and communications.
  • With agency leadership develops strategic communications plans for BGCB, addresses critical issues that inspire our current and potential donors, partners and stakeholders and highlight the impact BGCB has on our members, their families and the community.
  • Creates a comprehensive suite of tools that reflect BGCB’s messaging strategy and are designed to meet the specific needs of BGCB’s varied audiences. These tools include existing and emerging technology.
  • Generates content, identifies audiences, and ensures the timely and appropriate distribution of messaging across all available platforms.
  • Represents BGCB to the press and ensures that BGCB initiatives are understood by the media. Pitches stories, columns, editorial content to appropriate media outlets.
  • Positions BGCB as a youth development leader, and presents information to the public in a manner that informs and educates them about BGCB’s impact, as well as engagement and fundraising opportunities.
  • Manages the use of external resources as they pertain to the marketing and communications function of the organization.
  • Works with internal stakeholders to understand programmatic goals for new and existing funding programs, and writes/updates or edits/reviews proposals and supporting materials as needed.
  • Plays a central role in organizing post-campaign agency events. Works closely with Development team on event programs, incorporating key messaging in fundraising, cultivation and stewardship events. Leverages BGCB’s premiere events to reinforce mission and key messaging strategy, expand awareness, attract financial support and increase the number of volunteers serving the organization.
  • Formulates and expresses a donor-based perspective on digital content (including web and social media) to ensure it continually reflects BGCB’s activities to serve supporters and positions the organization as one that is worthy of donor support; likewise formulates and expresses a donor-based perspective on the integration of print and digital content to ensure broad and leveraged exposure with various audiences of donors and prospective donors. In support of the fundraising staff, supports the continuous acquisition of prospects at all levels of giving.
  • Works with internal stakeholders to conceptualize, write, edit, and oversee production of BGCB’s annual report, backgrounders/brochures, and other collateral/publications as required, including the incorporation of member and donor stories into print and online communications.
  • Oversee 2 staff who work collaboratively across the organization – 11 Clubs and YouthConnect. The Senior Director will demonstrate a commitment to professional development and work to construct opportunities for growth.

Position Requirements

The successful candidate will be a strategic and creative communicator and team leader with a keen sense of the prospect lifecycle and how best to support development and program staff in engaging donors through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.  S/he must have the capacity to support the EVP’s entrepreneurial initiatives to maximize results and have a proven track record in building, managing, and mentoring highly effective, diverse teams, as well as demonstrated success with relevant initiatives. S/he will possess a deep commitment to instilling practices and a culture that reflects BGCB.

Leadership Competencies and Personal Traits

  • Superior and distinctive writing ability demonstrated through 8+ years of relevant, progressively responsible writing and strategic messaging experience in a fundraising setting (preferably in human services).
  • Strong editing skills and fastidious attention to detail. Impeccable grammar, spelling, and language facility; experience giving constructive feedback to peers/staff.
  • Excellent project management, including proactive and independent development of work plans, timelines, and budgets.
  • A good eye for design; experience art-directing and conveying messaging goals to graphic designers; a thorough working knowledge of print production; ability to shepherd print publications from concept to delivery.
  • Ability to initiate and manage relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Strong analytical skills and well-developed business acumen; natural relationship management instincts; savvy for gaining buy-in from various stakeholders.
  • Orientation as a team player and leader with strong management skills.
  • A metrics-driven, entrepreneurial mindset that informs strategy and work.

  • The ability to succeed in a distinct and dynamic culture.
  • Knowledge of the principles of fundraising is preferred.
  • Ability to easily network and establish rapport and connections with individuals and groups.

  • Expertise in social media, e-communications platforms
  • Bachelor's Degree in business, marketing, communications or an equivalent combination of education, training, and expertise.
  • Proficiency in Raiser’s Edge, Microsoft Office and familiarity with graphics software
  • Flexibility to work varied hours for events and to meet deadlines
  • Ability to travel to BGCB sites and locations as required
