CONSERVATION COMMISSION TRAINING
Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection - $40,000

To disseminate information and educate the public on the Stormwater Management Policy and the Stormwater Management Standards as well as conduct 15 workshops across the state for audiences including conservation commissioners, planning boards and other local officials.

DIRECTED GRANTS PROGRAM
UMASS/Boston- Urban Harbors Institute - $10,000

To support the Coastal Zone '97 Conference, an international conference addressing coastal management issues through the sponsorship of scholarships to ensure diverse representation at the conference.

EMERGENCY SURVEILLANCE, REPORTING AND MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
Center for Coastal Studies - $99,251

To conduct surface and aerial surveillance of Cape Cod Bay to determine the location, aggregations and movement of northern right whales; to identify broad-scale area preferences of individual right whales and broad-scale changes in their distribution through radio telemetric studies; to develop a mathematical model for defining aggregations of animals; to provide timely updates of right whale locations to a Right Whale Coordinator and Clearinghouse managed by the National Marine Fisheries Service at Woods Hole, MA; and, to evaluate the value of surveillance-based management for both Cape Cod Bay and other habitats where right whales seasonally reside. (Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island, will collaborate on the development of the distribution model and aggregation probability box analysis; New England Aquarium will collaborate on the aerial surveillance; and, the Ecology Research Group will collaborate on the radio telemetry.)

To implement a Plankton Monitoring System which employs new technology for monitoring and analyzing the plankton resource on which the whales depend.

Georgia Environmental Policy Institute - $5,784
To publish and distribute Right Whale News over a three year period and expand coverage and distribution to Massachusetts, other New England states, and Canada.

International Wildlife Coalition - $23,375
To support the development and operational testing of snag- free fishing gear for use in reducing right whale entanglement and mortality.

New England Aquarium - $5,780
To evaluate avenues to educate the shipping community about right whales

New England Aquarium - $14,220
To analyze all photographs collected in Massachusetts waters during 1997 that are submitted to the New England Aquarium and integrate them into the North Atlantic Right Whale Catalog curated at the Aquarium.

UMASS/Boston- Department of Biology - $12,320
To analyze the birthing intervals of northern right whales.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution - $20,212
To improve the understanding of the nutritional and genetic aspects of northern right whale survival focusing on the complex interaction between genetics, growth potential, body condition, fecundity and fertility.

Boston Harbor Association - $12,500
To improve and enhance access to Boston Harbor beaches by underserved populations by expanding outreach and education programs, and developing community-based initiatives for long-term environmental benefits.

Buzzards Bay Project - $5,350
To document the effectiveness of a stormwater treatment/artificial wetland system, educate the public about its benefits and involve them in the long-term stewardship of the system.

Environmental Diversity Forum - $20,000
To support the "Chelsea Creek Project," which seeks to organize a watershed association to protect, preserve and enhance the resources of the Creek.

Ipswich River Watershed Association - $15,000
To support the Watershed Management Project, an effort to form subwatershed "stream teams" and create an integrating, regional Watershed Management Council.

Marine Studies Consortium - $15,000
To support outreach for the Task Force for Decentralized Wastewater Management by providing workshops and consulting services to municipalities regarding basic planning for wastewater treatment systems.

Massachusetts Water Watch Partnership- UMASS/Amherst - $10,000
To host a year-long, statewide workshop series covering all essential aspects of running a citizen water monitoring program.

Nantucket Harborlife - $8,200
To support a volunteer water quality monitoring project to increase direct citizen and community action to protect and enhance Nantucket's natural resources.

Salem Sound 2000 - $20,000
To develop a regional pollution prevention strategy by developing a profile of business composition in the region, identifying business and community needs, establishing a regional steering committee, and developing an ongoing plan for implementation of pollution prevention strategies.

The Nature Conservancy - $5,000
To work to protect coastal plain ponds, focusing on Mary Dunn Pond complex in Hyannis as a pilot project.

The Water Works Group - $18,645
To create economic incentives for improving and maintaining high water quality with a focus on viable shellfisheries which provide investment opportunities, income, jobs, food, and family-related recreational opportunities.

MASSACHUSETTS BAY AND BUZZARDS BAY COMPREHENSIVE CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT PLAN (CCMP) INITIATIVE
A joint program requiring a 1:2 match to implement the CCMPs for coastal municipalities.
Red Gate Marsh Restoration Project - $5,000

To support the restoration of the Red Gate Marsh in Rowley.

Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development District - $30,000
To design a minimum of five stormwater remediation facilities to remediate discharges contributing to shellfish bed closures in Buzzards Bay, working in collaboration with the Buzzards Bay Project National Estuary Program.

Town of Dartmouth - $18,000 and Town of Wareham - $1,500
To support landowner outreach and the acquisition of conservation restrictions and fee-simple titles in the Slocums River and Onset Bay watersheds.

MINI-GRANTS INITIATIVE
Conservation Law Foundation $2,250

To a conference regarding the impacts of fishing gear on the sea floor of New England.

Secretary's Awards for Excellence in Environmental Education - $1,050
(Awards from the Secretaries of Environmental Affairs and Education honoring the efforts of those who help foster environmental education.)

To support awards to six schools in Massachusetts for programs that benefit water quality in the Commonwealth: Ottoson Middle School, Arlington - $300, Mark's Meadow Laboratory School, Amherst - $150, Dighton Middle School - $150, Westport High school/Westport River Watershed Alliance - $150, Amherst/Pelham Elementary Schools - $150, Northbridge Environmental Awareness Group/Northbridge High School, Whitinsville - $150.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION PARTNERSHIP INITIATIVE
Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation - $10,165

To restore, protect and improve the waters and watersheds of Berkshire County through projects of The Great Barrington River Walk and Hoosic River Watershed Association.

The Boston Foundation - $25,000
To expand The Boston Foundation's environmental grantmaking program by enlarging the focus of its Fund for Preservation of Wildlife and Natural Areas (FPWNA) through the development of a "field of interest" component and the continuation of grantmaking to organizations working in the areas of coastal zone and coastal watershed protection and/or restoration.

Community Foundation of Cape Cod - $25,000
To enhance environmental grantmaking capacity through support of a small grants program for water quality monitoring, education, and ecological management on the Cape.

Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts - $15,000
To increase the awareness of ecological concepts, stimulate behavior that leads to protecting and maintaining New Bedford Harbor, and encourage activities that build pride and appreciation for this valuable resource.

Crossroads Community Foundation - $15,000
To expand the Environment and Community grantmaking program designed to help protect the environment, educate the region on environmental issues, and involve local citizens in environmental problem-solving, and to work with the Massachusetts Watershed Coalition and other environmental organizations to support local citizen involvement in protecting and enhancing the Concord watershed area.

Center for Coastal Studies - $9,500

To support for a 12-month program of public and classroom environmental education and outreach on the northern right whale and its Cape Cod Bay habitat.

Chelsea Schools - $10,000
To develop a research and public outreach project, performed by high school students, targeting the community of Chelsea.

Coalition for Alternative Wastewater Treatment - $10,000
To produce a conference report, Remedial On-Site Wastewater Treatment Districts: A Model NPDES Permit Approach, encouraging the advancement of alternative wastewater treatments such as a municipally-managed on-site district, a district with multiple on-site systems treated as a single NPDES permit.

Coalition for Buzzards Bay - $9,000
To create a traveling exhibit on wetlands for use in grades 1-6 in schools throughout the Buzzards Bay watershed.

Massachusetts Watershed Coalition - $20,000
To support the Watershed Awareness and Policy Initiative, a public outreach project working with individual watershed associations to develop comprehensive public education and outreach plans.

Neponset River Watershed Association - $7,000
To support the Neponset Sub-Watershed Approach Project to develop and test a new model of community-based, collaborative watershed management.

Schooner Ernestina Commission - $14,500
To develop an educational station aboard the Ernestina called Leaving a Wake, involving participants in a hands-on experiment to initiate a discussion of the pervasive environmental problems facing the coastal area of Massachusetts and the need for remediation.

Westport River Watershed Alliance - $15,000
To support an Adopt-A-Watershed program for the Westport River.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution - $5,000
To develop a non-technical environmental information database for use by the public via Internet that provides answers to commonly requested topics, themes and questions, as well as late-breaking scientific and environmental discoveries.

MINI-GRANTS INITIATIVE
New England Grassroots Environment Fund - $15,000

To support a new cooperative initiative with the New England Grassroots Environment Fund, a program administered by the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, to provide small grants to organizations in Massachusetts with a water quality focus.

Secretary's Awards for Excellence in Environmental Education - $1,000
(Awards from the Secretaries of Environmental Affairs and Education honoring the efforts of those who help foster environmental education.)

To support awards to three schools in Massachusetts (Greater New Bedford Vocational Technology School - $400, Chatham Jr./Sr. High School - $300, Park Avenue School, Webster - $300) for programs which benefit water quality in the Commonwealth.

The following three grants maximized benefits by leveraging additional resources.
Island Alliance - $25,000

A grant to be matched 2:1 to leverage additional funds to be used to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the Boston Harbor Islands as a National Park. Educational materials and outreach activities will be the focus.

Massachusetts Riverways Program - $20,000
A grant to be matched 1:1 for implementation of the Mass Urban Rivers Action Program (MURAP) to provide outreach and technical assistance to community groups interested in restoring degraded river habitats in five urban river areas.

Trust for Public Land - $50,000
A grant to create a revolving land fund to hold or secure land in Massachusetts dedicated to the public good and improving water resources, including at least three properties - a 6,000 acre National Wildlife Refuge in Bufflehead Bay, and others.

Island Alliance - $2,500

To print a brochure as part of a public outreach campaign aimed at raising awareness about the Boston Harbor Islands.

JSI/Center for Environmental Health Studies - $5,000

To improve conditions in Chelsea Creek and surrounding wetlands, train students to be more active advocates for environmental protection in the community, teach environmental science concepts, and introduce a number of future career opportunities for students.

DIRECTED GRANTS PROGRAM
Massachusetts Attorney General's Office - $8,000

To support the printing of workbooks for the Attorney General's Local Environment Enforcement Conference.

GENERAL GRANTS PROGRAM
Associates of Marine Biological Laboratory - $3,400

To support a week-long teacher training course for ten Falmouth elementary school teachers to implement a new curriculum on water quality and to involve students in water quality testing.

Boston Harbor/Massachusetts Bays Educators Conference - $2,000
To support water-based activities and fieldwork as part of the 6th annual Educators conference and to purchase and distribute copies of the Charting Our Course curriculum guide.

Boston Natural Areas Fund - $15,000
To support a twelve-month program of public and classroom environmental education and outreach at Neponset Marsh in Dorchester and Wood Island Bay Marsh in East Boston, and to develop and print a guide to each marsh.

Center for Coastal Studies - $13,450
To design and install 16 natural history/conservation displays at strategic viewing points throughout the Outer Cape communities between Provincetown and Orleans to foster greater understanding and awareness of coastal and marine environments.

Coalition for Buzzards Bay - $13,000
To train and recruit a network of citizens to monitor the activities of the boards of local government whose decisions affect the future of Buzzards Bay.

Essex County Greenbelt Association - $3,500
To develop and publish an Educator's Salt Marsh Curriculum Guide to the Cox Reservation in Essex for teachers and students in grades K-8 and to train teachers throughout Essex County.

Manomet Bird Observatory - $15,000
To support curriculum development and training of twelve teachers to initiate "Taking Stock of our Fisheries," an environmental education program to improve high school students' awareness of fisheries.

FY 1992

Boston Harbor Revival - $2,000

To increase awareness of Boston Harbor and its islands and celebrate the diverse population of Boston through support of the first annual Boston Harbor festival.

Boston Natural Areas Fund - $15,000
To support a 12-month project of public and classroom education at Neponset Marsh in Dorchester and Wood Island Bay in East Boston.

Cape Outdoor Discovery - $6,000
To publish Cape Cod Environmental Data, a bi-monthly publication that makes technical data and advice available for teachers' use in the classroom.

Lloyd Center for Environmental Studies - $15,000
To implement and pilot test a new curriculum on natural resources and threats to Buzzards Bay for 6th grade students in school systems within the Buzzards Bay watershed.

Massachusetts Marine Educators/Coastal Zone Management - $8,000
To publish 5,000 copies of Charting Our Course, an activity guide for grades 4-12 on water quality in the Gulf of Maine and other coastal waters of Massachusetts.

Salem Sound 2000- Salem Partnership - $5,000
To support a symposium and newsletters to promote community awareness and facilitate municipal and citizen management of Salem Sound estuary as a bioregion.

Sea Hull - $10,000
To support a new environmental education program at Weir Estuary Park for students from six to eight South Shore towns.

Town of Barnstable - $14,355
To support the reconstruction of Middle Pond herring run and development of an interpretive wayside exhibit at the site of the Route 149 fish ladder.

UMASS/Boston- Project Oceanology - $11,500
To introduce the study of the marine environment into five public schools, integrating classroom study with on-the-water research aboard Enviro Lab III.

Westport River Watershed Alliance - $10,000
To implement a model citizen water quality monitoring project in the Westport River.
