COMMUNITY FOUNDATION PARTNERSHIP INITIATIVE
Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation - $25,000

To support initiatives in Berkshire County protecting and preserving water resources including Housatonic River Restoration, Great Barrington Housatonic River Walk, Old Maid's Swimming Hole, and River Park and River Walk on the Housatonic in Lee.

The Boston Foundation - $25,000
To expand the Fund for Preservation of Wildlife and Natural Areas' Coastal Initiative making grants to organizations working in the areas of coastal zone and coastal watershed protection and/or restoration.

Community Foundation of Cape Cod - $25,000
To support and expand the Community Foundation of Cape Cod's environmental grantmaking program and to develop a collaborative project between the Citizen Water Quality Monitoring Groups on Cape Cod and the Islands.

Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts - $25,000
To expand an environmental education program for New Bedford school-aged children that serves to increase awareness of ecological concepts, stimulate behavior that leads to protecting and maintaining a usable harbor, and encourage activities that build pride and appreciation for this valuable resource.

Crossroads Community Foundation - $15,000
To support and enhance an environmental grantmaking program by offering capacity building grants to Metrowest organizations working to protect the waters and watersheds in that region.

Greater Worcester Community Foundation - $25,000
To build the capacity of local citizens and agencies by offering one or two core operating grants for a primary coalition and several smaller grants that focus on the protection of local watersheds and waterways.

CONSERVATION COMMISSION TRAINING
Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection - $50,000

To conduct Riverfront Protection Regulation Workshops and Phase II Stormwater Guidance Workshops for conservation commissioners, local authorities and others.

DIRECTED GRANTS PROGRAM
Coalition for Buzzards Bay - $5,000

To support data analysis of the Buzzards Bay Citizens' Water Quality Monitoring Program.

Connecticut River Watershed Council - $2,500
To support efforts to nominate the Connecticut River for national recognition as one of 10 American Heritage Rivers in the country.

The Dunn Foundation - $5,000
To facilitate responsible and appropriate environmental planning, and improve water quality through "The New England Small Town Project: A Community Based Planning Process" using Hardwick, Massachusetts as a model.

Environmental Careers Organization - $800
To sponsor one student scholarship for the National Environment Career Conference.

Massachusetts Coastal Zone Management - $10,000
To produce a plan to fund the development, design, printing, and distribution of future Coast Guides and develop strategies to ensure the project is financially self-sustaining.

Secretary's Awards for Excellence in Environmental Education - $1,000
(Awards from the Secretary of Environmental Affairs honoring the efforts of those who help foster environmental education.)

To support awards to five schools in Massachusetts for programs that benefit water quality in the Commonwealth: Blackstone/Millville Regional High School - $200; Triton Regional School, Byfield - $100; East Middle School, Braintree - $300; Girl Scout Troup #778, East Falmouth - $100; Fitchburg High School Environmental Club - $300.

Center for Coastal Studies - $20,000

To identify and analyze significant premigratory staging areas for the roseate tern along the coast of Massachusetts.

Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences - $21,400
To evaluate the extent to which juvenile least terns disperse away from their natal colony to breed and to improve the understanding of regional subpopulation boundaries of the species, thereby improving the management, protection, and monitoring of this sensitive species.

Mass. Division of Fish & Wildlife- Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Prog. - $25,000
To restore the Penikese Ternery in Buzzards Bay and to enhance habitat capacity and productivity of common terns and endangered roseate terns.

Town of Barnstable - $5,487
To support piping plover research and monitoring, and investigate population demographics in order to develop management strategies.

Tufts University- School of Veterinary Medicine - $10,000
To study common loons and other aquatic birds as monitors of aquatic pollution.

UMASS/Boston- Department of Biology - $17,691
To use molecular tools to establish sex-specific demographic characterization of the endangered roseate tern and identify factors contributing to the critical status of this population.

Association for the Preservation of Cape Cod - $7,550
To produce a guide to explain Title 5 of the State Environmental Code, rules governing on-site wastewater disposal, to the public.

Berkshire County Regional Planning Commission - $20,000
To offer a series of workshops to educate the public, local officials, and environmentalists on the Rivers Protection Act and to develop model approaches that can be adapted by all 32 Berkshire municipalities to effectively implement the Act.

Boston Natural Areas Fund - $12,600
To initiate a community outreach program regarding water quality and public health in Neponset River communities and, in the process, stimulate and support public participation in river restoration and protection.

Center for Ecological Technology - $8,500
To develop a comprehensive "River Awareness and Action Project" that actively engages students at four high schools and two colleges in river investigation and culminates with an interactive video teleconference among participating schools.

City of Gloucester Board of Health/North Shore Regional Health Agent's Network - $5,500
To conduct a workshop for local septic system installers which covers essential aspects of proper septic system installation to minimize water quality degradation.

Lenox Institute of Water Technology - $14,785
To organize and develop an adopt-a-lake program in conjunction with local high schools and lake preservation associations in an effort to educate students in lake ecology and introduce them to field and lab techniques in water quality monitoring.

Massachusetts Audubon- North Shore Conservancy Advocacy - $10,000
To increase awareness of the significance of region's waterways and the problems caused by agricultural runoff and to develop resource materials that will assist horse owners and stable operators to implement environmentally sound manure and stormwater management techniques.

Massachusetts Forestry Association - $5,760
To present a series of four Woodland Management for Better Watersheds workshops across the state to show landowners how well-managed woodlands help protect important water resources while still allowing productive use of forests.

Neponset River Watershed Association - $11,775
To raise awareness of water quantity issues as a result of heavy municipal water withdrawals that place stream flows at critical levels and to recommend alternatives for improving these practices.

North & South Rivers Watershed Association - $19,700
To raise the consciousness of individuals regarding the relationship between their activities and the health of the watershed through education, scientific discovery and community action with a focus on community access to shellfishing.

Pioneer Valley Planning Commission- Connecticut River Clean Up Committee - $15,000
To develop and implement a regional Roof Drain Disconnect program for communities on the lower stretch of the Connecticut River to improve water quality by diverting stormwater runoff from combined sewer systems.

Springfield Science Museum - $20,000
To develop and expand a multi-disciplinary environmental curriculum highlighting the social history, ecology, physics and chemistry of the Mill River watershed in Springfield.

The New England Small Farm Institute - $19,600
To assist farmers in selecting and implementing best management practices that address water quality protection.

WOMR/Public Access Radio - $15,000
To create a public affairs program devoted to examining the issues and interrelationships between the economy and ecology of Cape Cod called The Cape Cod Environmental Roundtable.

Westport River Watershed Alliance - $7,500
To promote an Adopt-a-Watershed curriculum for high school students to develop a hands-on field study program.

American Museum of Natural History - $7,150

To assess the role of inbreeding in the lack of recovery of northern right whales.

Center for Coastal Studies- $29,995
To investigate the use of satellite products, principally thermal imagery, to determine the relationship between whale distribution and water body characteristics in the coastal waters of Cape Cod Bay and Massachusetts Bay.

International Wildlife Coalition- $12,000
To investigate the movement patterns, habitat use, and subsurface behaviors of right whales in Cape Cod/Massachusetts Bays through the use of multi-sensor VHF radio tags and focal animal studies.

MIT Sea Grant College Program- Center for Fisheries Engineering Research - $30,000
To determine the feasibility of using passive detection techniques as a means of identifying and localizing northern right whales.

New England Aquarium, Boston - $20,000
To analyze photographs collected in Massachusetts waters during 1998, digitize the Right Whale Catalog, and update the published identification catalog.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution - $60,000 (over 3 years)
To support a northern right whale health assessment by measuring blubber thickness in northern right whales in Cape Cod Bay and reducing and analyzing data in the context of the reproductive and sighting history of individuals.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution - $30,000
To support a pilot test of an acoustic recording tag to measure right whale responses to an approaching vessel.

WATER QUALITY MONITORING PROGRAM
Pioneer Valley Planning Commission - Barnes Aquifer Protection Advisory Cmtee. - $8,000

To evaluate the condition of surface waters in the Barnes Regional Aquifer System recharge area and make recommendations for further steps to address identified contaminants.

Citizens for the Protection of Waquoit Bay - $5,525
To support a lecture/training series for citizen water quality monitors and create an advisory group charged with developing a long-term plan for regional citizen water quality monitoring as well as printing and distribution of The Caper, a newsletter about and for the region's citizen monitors.

Merrimack River Watershed Council - $30,000
To support a collaborative effort between the Massachusetts Water Watch Partnership, Charles River Watershed Association, Bridgewater State College and the Merrimack River Watershed Council to help volunteer groups, statewide, perform focused and credible assessments of water resources.

Nashua River Watershed Association - $15,000
To support a "Water Quality Monitoring: Heart of the Stream Team Program" which will encompass NRWA's core water sampling program in at least 14 Central Massachusetts communities and emphasize the resolution of unacceptable fecal coliform levels.
