What the License Plates Support Since the state's first environmental license plate - a four-color design of the North Atlantic right whale and two roseate terns - was unveiled in 1994, 70,000 Massachusetts drivers have supported environmental programming through their purchases. The tax-deductible contribution that each driver makes to obtain a plate has generated revenues for the Trust of more than $16 million to date. This steady income stream has enabled us to increase our grantmaking capacity and reliably chart future programs. Motorists' contributions to the environmental license plate series have allowed the Trust to distribute approximately $1million in grants annually to nearly 40 environmental protection and education projects statewide. How to Order a License Plate The plates cost $76, which includes a $40 tax deductible donation that goes to the Trust. There is a renewal fee of $81 every two years.
