New e-Filing requirements for tax-exempt returns (990s and 990-PFs) (February 14, 2005)
On January 12, the IRS released regulations that require certain tax-exempt organizations to file annual exempt organization returns electronically beginning in 2006. For tax year 2005 returns due in 2006, the regulations require organizations with total assets of $100 million or more to file electronically.

Beginning in 2007, the electronic filing requirement will be expanded to include the annual returns of organizations with $10 million or more. In addition, private foundations and charitable trusts will be required to file Form 990-PF electronically regardless of their asset size.

The IRS is seeking comments on these proposed regulations (see the article titled “Returns Required on Magnetic Media”) click here to read the regs and comment. Comments are due by February 28, 2005.
