Independent Sector issues policy platform (updated 1/20/09)
The new Congress and administration should strengthen the social safety net, promote opportunities for individuals to give back, ease lobbying restrictions on charities, and ensure that foreign-aid programs respect workers’ civil rights, according to policy proposals issued last week by Independent Sector. The policy platform offers recommendations in six broad categories that include: ensuring adequate resources and responsible fiscal policies that support community programs; preserving and expanding policies that help Americans give back to their communities; ensuring that nonprofits have the capital to serve the needs of their communities; protecting the rights of citizens to speak out through nonprofits; ensuring that Americans are able to continue vital charitable work throughout the world without unduly jeopardizing their safety or their civil rights; and supporting funding and policies that provide for transparency and accountability to ensure integrity and public trust in our institutions. Independent Sector worked with an advisory committee and hundreds of charities and foundations to develop the proposals, IS president and CEO Diana Aviv said.
